Principal's Message:
WHO ARE WE?
WELCOME TO COLUMBUS MAGNET SCHOOL
My name is Medard Thomas and I am honored to be your new principal at Columbus Magnet School; a forward-thinking learning environment. We are dedicated to providing child centered experiences through an integrated curricular lens because learning is not compartmentalized. The benefits of being exposed to an integrated curriculum is supported by brain-based research. When children are routinely given the opportunity to make connections in their learning, they are awakening pathways in their brain. As a result, they are better equipped to deconstruct challenging problems. They are able to think deeply, ask probing and critical questions and make sophisticated and educated guesses.
Our teachers share the ideals of putting the needs of children first. They have structured a safe place that encourages risk-taking. Their lesson designs are both thoughtful and purposeful, and our students showcase their learning in a variety of ways. The best way to make school relevant and meaningful is to embrace the arts, thereby enhancing all subject areas. That is the reason why we proudly display our HOT Schools (HIGHER ORDER THINKING) banner outside the building.
Our actions are guided by the essential question: "I wonder if this is the best thing for my student?" We do not suppress and inhibit, rather, we unleash and set free. We work closely with parents to strengthen the home/school connection. It is not uncommon to find parents volunteering in our building during the day. Our PTA works tirelessly to help our teachers extend learning outside the boundaries of the building. They also support our efforts to bring a piece of the world into the classrooms. These beliefs explain the other important banner that flies outside our building: Bank Street College. As a proud alum of Bank Street College of Education, my personal goal is to ensure Columbus Magnet holds on to its progressive educational beliefs pioneered by legendary child development theorists and educators from the Bank Street School for Children. We are proud to promote principles driven by best practices for all children.
On behalf of our amazing staff, welcome to Columbus Magnet School, an established community of people committed to nurturing curiosity and the love of learning.
Fondly,
Medard Thomas
Principal
